DENSO win prestigious ‘Green Globe’ Award
The Green Business Awards 2009 - the ‘Green Globes’ – are the ‘Oscars’ of UK environmental awards. They uphold the most innovative, ambitious and effective initiatives by UK business for achieving sustainability, and implementing smart business practice.
The Awards are designed to encourage companies and organisations to spend time and effort in marrying business goals with environmental aims. All major business sectors are represented in the Awards, which are designed to acknowledge the year’s best efforts and achievement in each area.
Telford based car component manufacturer, DENSO Manufacturing UK, are celebrating after winning the ‘Waste Reduction’ Green Globe at the Grosvenor House Hotel, Park Lane.
“The calibre of the competition was staggering”, said Manel Roura, Environmental Officer at DENSO. “Everyone from BT to M&S, the BBC to British Gas were there; all competing against the best to prove their green credentials”.
“This award recognises the commitment and cooperation of every DENSO Associate who help in identifying and recommending waste reduction initiatives. In 2004 DENSO Manufacturing UK set about changing the way it dealt with the waste sent to landfill. At the time, 55 tonnes were going to landfill every month, but within two years we managed to reduce this to zero. As a result of accurate waste classification, DENSO now recycle 94% of all waste produced. The remaining 6% goes for incineration, with some energy recovery, but none goes to landfill. Each area of production was challenged to improve their performance and, each week, it was monitored to determine whether they had made any progress.”
“From 2004 we established an Environmental Champions group, within the plant, who started looking at reducing raw material use, improving energy conservation, energy reclamation and waste water management”, said Manel Roura “The award is testament to the hard work and dedication of all our Associates. DENSO would also like to thank VEOLIA, ENVIROWISE, NISP and BESST whose collective support has been invaluable in reaching this achievement. We want to hold up this "Green Globe" as a beacon to our success and also as an encouragement to other Shropshire businesses, to follow our lead and keep Shropshire a beautiful place to live and work”.
